HERINET 2025 Workshop: Building a digital and innovative higher education ecosystem towards Net Zero.

On June 20, 2025, at Thu Dau Mot University, the opening session of the International Scientific Conference took place with the theme "Sustainable cooperation for transnational higher education, research and innovation in the goal of net zero emissions (Net Zero), Artificial Intelligence (AI), smart manufacturing and industry 5.0" - abbreviated as HERINET.
The HERINET Conference was co-organized by Cardiff University, Greenwich University, Newcastle University (UK) and Thu Dau Mot University, Hung Yen University of Technical Education (Vietnam), with support from the Global Wales Partnership Fund and the Vietnam - UK Higher Education, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Network.
Attending the conference, on behalf of Thu Dau Mot University, there was Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Tuan Anh - Chairman of the University Council; and representatives of leaders of affiliated units. On the international side and partner units, there were many prestigious scientists and experts such as: Associate Professor, Dr. Le Chi Hieu, Greenwich University, UK; Dr. Michael Packianather, Cardiff University, UK; Prof. Dr. Anh Phan, Newcastle University, UK; Prof. Dr. Nikolay Bozhidarov Zlatov, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Bulgaria Prof. Dr. Jamaluddin Mahmud, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Malaysia. In addition, the conference also gathered representatives of domestic universities and research institutes such as: Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education, Nha Trang University, and universities and colleges in Binh Duong province and the Southeast region.
Speaking at the conference, Associate Professor Dr. Le Tuan Anh expressed his honor that Thu Dau Mot University was able to coordinate to organize a large-scale and meaningful international academic event like HERINET. Associate Professor Dr. Le Tuan Anh emphasized that the conference is not only an opportunity for academic exchange and connecting the global research community, but also contributes to improving international cooperation capacity, promoting higher education associated with sustainable development. In the context of globalization and digital transformation, Associate Professor Dr. Le Tuan Anh emphasized that promoting cooperation in education and research is an inevitable requirement. The Associate Professor affirmed that Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW of the Politburo has established science, technology, innovation and digital transformation as strategic pillars for national growth, this vision is consistent with the development orientation of the Southern key economic region. Located in the center of Binh Duong province, a locality considered the "industrial capital" of the Southern region, Thu Dau Mot University plays an important role in training high-quality human resources, promoting research and technology transfer, meeting the requirements of the country's industrialization and modernization process. On that basis, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Tuan Anh hopes that the HERINET 2025 conference will be an important first step, creating a foundation for long-term and substantive cooperation programs between Thu Dau Mot University and international partners, thereby actively contributing to the sustainable development of the Southern key economic region and the whole country.
The HERINET 2025 conference took place on June 20 and 21, including plenary sessions and specialized sessions, attracting a large number of domestic and international scientists, lecturers, experts and educational managers to participate in the discussion. During the working sessions, delegates presented many in-depth papers focusing on the role of transnational higher education (TNE) and mechanisms to promote effective connections between stakeholders. The key contents discussed included: (1) Developing TNE programs and common learning modules revolving around areas such as: innovative product development, smart manufacturing (including semiconductor technology), sustainable development, innovation and entrepreneurship. These programs aim to integrate advanced elements such as personalized education, artificial intelligence, industry 5.0, carbon neutrality, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs), and the UK's AHEP4 standards to ensure global quality standards. (2) Building a strong ecosystem in digital higher education (DHE), innovation and entrepreneurship (HEKIE), focusing on the fields of digital education, generative AI, smart manufacturing, industry 5.0, carbon neutrality and UNSDGs. In addition, delegates also spent time discussing and proposing specific cooperation roadmaps between Vietnam and the UK, aiming to build sustainable, effective and flexible cooperation models suitable for the global context.
Through in-depth discussions and networking activities, HERINET affirms its important role in orienting the development of a modern, socially responsible and sustainable higher education. The workshop contributes to establishing a long-term and effective cooperative relationship between Thu Dau Mot University and universities in Vietnam and the UK, aiming to build and develop a digital higher education ecosystem, innovation, knowledge transfer and entrepreneurship, in line with the United Nations' sustainable development goals.
